Gen 1, Chapter 2: All That Glitters Isn't Gold

Although Evelyn made it clear to Nigel that she wanted a child as soon as they were moved in with each other, she never in a million years thought he'd actually accept her request. All throughout her pregnancy, Evelyn was on cloud nine; The pregnancy went as smoothly as pregnancies could come, and the growing nursery that the couple was building together only made her more excited to bring their baby into world.

And soon, the baby was brought into the world, as a little girl named Goldie; Either because they were hoping she would get her mother's golden locks or, even if she didn't, she would simply be the golden treasure of her parents' eyes.

She was, if only for a brief period of time.

Never in a million years did Evelyn ever think that one of the days where she stayed home to paint would end up being the day that defined her life.

Call the doctor.

"I'm sorry, Ms. Adams... but there's nothing we can do. Your daughter's dead. From the looks of it, it was probably something to do with her airways, they must've been blocked by dust or other particles while she was sleeping. I'm sorry for your loss, mam."

Evelyn's anger wasn't your typical kind of anger; After all, she never had anything to be angry about before this. But she didn't slam a hole in the wall, and she didn't kick over the crib where her daughter used to sleep. She simply waited until the doctor left with her child-Her child's body- slumped herself up against the nearest wall, and, for the first time since she was a toddler, or perhaps even longer, she let herself cry. Sure, she was an ugly crier, but it felt good to cry today.

As she heard the front door unlock, that's when panic was added to her tears. Oh, that's right... Nigel doesn't know yet, does he? "It's okay, hun, I've got Goldie for y- Hun? What's wrong? Where's Goldie?"

Even at the mention of her daughter's name, Evelyn began to break down, ruining the shred of confidence she had mustered up to tell Nigel about their daughter's fate. She limped into her husband's arms, never having been so desperate to find a safe haven in her life. "Nigel. Goldie's gone... she had an asthma attack last night...she's dead, Nigel, Goldie's dead!" Nigel held his wife silently as he could only watch her break down.

"Do you ever want to try again?"

She waited until she didn't look as disgusting to answer his question. "Not now. Soon though; I'd like that."

Nigel knew that she'd want to wait before their next attempt at bringing life into the world. Right now, she needed comfort more than anything else. Soon, though, they'd have another shot, and they were going to do it right this time.
