Gen 2, Chapter 2: Nikki
Two times over Penny had gotten pregnant, and both times the end result was a baby boy. Sure, having a boy wasn't a bad thing- of course, it wasn't, Penny was more than thrilled to be a mother. But still, time went by, and she needed a girl to satisfy her mother's wishes of having a matriarchy, and as she got older, that dream went further and further away.
It wasn't long until she would become a full-fledged middle-aged adult soon, though she shuttered at the thought. It's not the growing older part that worried her. The fact was if she waited any longer, her children would have to watch her die. But shecouldn't wouldn't have that for her children. And so, as sorry as it made her, she eventually coped with having two options. Either betray her mother's wish of having a matriarchy on the second generation, or suck it up and adopt a girl from the orphanage.
She also knew she needed Leroy's input, and he was terrified even at just the thought. "No. Absolutely not."
"Why not? She'll never even have to know that she was adopted, we'll get one that looks like a mix of both of us."
"That's what I'm afraid of, what if she looks too much like me?"
"Why would you be so afraid of that? I don't think you're that unattractive."
"It's not about her being ugly, Pen. I just- forget it, alright? I just have bad memories with that adoption agency and I..."
"You what?"
"Forget it. Maybe I'm just overthinking things." They both knew that was a lame excuse, as Leroy would never overthink anything (Heck, he had trouble just thinking about things)
Still, Penny decided to ignore it, instead focusing on getting her plea to adopt accepted. "So, is that a yes on the adoption thing?" Penny said, her eyes twinkling.
"Sure, sure."
Soon enough Penny came back home holding the small hand of a six-year-old girl. "This is our house, and your new father should be right inside."
"Leroy! Come meet your daughter!" Soon enough, their eyes met when he appeared from the bathroom, and nearly invisible tears started welling up in his eyes as he let out a whisper that only he could hear as if through the Grim Reaper was standing right by him. "Nikki..."
Only Penny's voice could take his eyes off of his daughter. "This is Lucy. Lucy, this is your father, okay?" Lucy. He liked that name. It was classic, graceful, and cute, and wouldn't be anything like whatever name Krysta would have given her. And that's exactly what he needed.
As the evening was winding down and Lucy got settled in her new bed, right across the room were Leroy and Penny, settling down in the "Founder's Bed" that had been in the exact same spot since Penny's mother had met Nigel.
"So, why did you hate that adoption center so much? You can tell me anything, you know. After all, we are married now."
"Well, it's a long, complicated story."
